7 Tips to Working From Home

The COVID-19 has changed human being’s life, including adjusting to the new ways of working. While some of us have returned to our normal workplace, many are still working from home or going through a phased return. Even though some of us enjoy the life of working from home, changes like these have been challenging too.

It is a big challenge for us to deal with work and our personal and family life. Alongside this, feeling stress, lack of motivation, anxiety is completely normal.

These simple tips can help you feel more productive and motivated, and take care of your mental health while working from home.

 1. Pretend you are working in the office

Without steady schedules, the lines between work and personal time can get blurred and be stressful to get right. Pretend you are working in the office, follow your normal sleep and work patterns if you can, and stay consistent.

Get up at the same time, eat breakfast and get out of your pyjamas. Try scheduling in your "commute time" and spend it exercising, reading or listening to music before logging in. When your workday stops, stop working. Shut down and focus on your home life. And at the end of the day, try to get to bed at your usual time.

2. Make a long-term use workspace

If you can, find a quiet space away from people and distractions like the TV. Get everything you need in one place, before you start work – chargers, pens, paper and anything else – and shut the door if you can. Even in a small or shared space, try to designate an area for work.

Lastly, get comfortable. While it might be tempting to sit on the sofa, it's much better to sit at a desk or table. Check the guidelines to setup your workspace correctly, as much as you possibly can.

3. Take a regular break

It’s better for you to take a regular break and give yourself time to concentrate on something else so you feel more focused when you return. Even just 5 to 10 minutes of short breaks each hour can really help your productivity too. You could go out for a walk, take a cup of coffee or just sit there and don’t think about anything.

4. Keep in touch with coworkers

Working from home may make you feel more isolated. But there are lots of ways to keep in touch with your coworkers. You could schedule video calls instead of text message, you could share your feelings as well. Ask how they're doing and whether there are ways you can support each other.

5. Set boundaries

When you are working from home, children may think you are on holiday and want to spend time with you. It’s an effective way to have a discussion with your family and remind them that you still have work to do.

You need to set boundaries with work, too. When your workday stops, just switch off and enjoy the time with family at home.

6. Think longer term

There is a possibility that you may be continuing to work from home for a while, so think about ways you could improve how you work while at home. And try to explore if there is any way could improve your efficiency of working from home.

7. Be nice to yourself

All of us needs to adapt to this unusual situation which needs a period of time. So if it’s not so easy for you to get used to the life of working from home, relax and be nice to yourself. Take your time, get used to it gradually and believe in yourself.
